As of January 2023, the number of 1st Dan black belt certificates registered in South Korea was around 3.49 million, while the number of 1st Dan certificates registered overseas was roughly 574.4 thousand. Dan holders are required to continue their training for the amount of years corresponding to their level to be eligible for taking the advancement exam to the next level. For example, a second level Dan would need to train for at least two years before taking the third level Dan exam.
