The overall bacterial ecology of selected source and point-of-use (POU) water samples in a rural area of Haiti's Central Plateau was explored utilizing culture-independent pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA genes. The goal was to assess and comprehensively understand the microbial diversity associated with the water sources (mostly rivers or springs) and the POU water samples from households. The impact of interventions (filtration) in removing or reducing the overall microbial loads of the water used as the drinking water by the Haitians living in the Central Plateau area was also evaluated.
