We studied drought effects on ecosystem functioning in a semiarid
grass-shrub steppe South of Argentina. We designed a 2-year rainfall
manipulation experiment where we decreased water input with rainout
shelters during two consecutive years, which included 3 levels of
rainfall interception (30%, 55%, and 80%) and control. We estimated
drought effects on volumetric and gravimetric soil water content, on
litter decomposition of a dominant grass, and on inorganic nitrogen
content and N mineralization process. We also measured drought effects
on leaf elongation and tiller production of a dominant grass, leaf
water potential of grasses and shrubs, and drought effects on percent
canopy cover. This data was collected between May 1999 and May 2001 in
field expeditions to Rio Mayo experimental site, Chubut,
Argentina. This data was obtained for project CRN12, which has
