HLA-DRB1*0401 is associated with susceptibility, while HLA-DRB1*0402 is associated with resistance to developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and collagen-induced arthritis in humans and mice. Pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene from the fecal microbiomes of transgenic mice could provide information on the relationship among these HLA genes, the microbiome and RA.
