ビットコイン（Bitcoin）は最大発行枚数に近づきつつあり、価格が高騰するとともに採掘が困難になっています。一般的に、入手できるコインの数が少なくなればなるほど、仮想通貨（暗号資産）の価値は高くなります。特にコインが最大発行枚数に達した場合には、それ以上の採掘が不可能になり、市場価格は需要と供給を反映することになります。ビットコインの最大発行枚数は2,100万枚で、採掘速度が4年ごとに半減することを前提とした2017年の予測では、最後のコインが採掘されるのは2140年頃とされています。
仮想通貨の供給量の差
仮想通貨の開発者は、ブロックチェーンや通貨戦略に応じてコインに一定の上限を設けるかどうかを決定できます。イーサリアム（Ethereum）には供給上限がないため、マイナー(採掘者）はこの仮想通貨を無限に採掘できます。こうした仮想通貨は「インフレ型の仮想通貨」と呼ばれ、供給量が継続的に増加し続けます。需要を上回る量のトークンが流通し続けることで、全体の価値が下がるためにこう呼ばれています。仮想通貨によっては（無期限の）供給を制限するか、トークンを焼却（破棄）するものもあります。同様の現象は、2022年に仮想通貨「テラ（LUNA）」で発生しました。
供給量が限定的な仮想通貨の魅力
投資家は、供給が限られているか、あるいは供給量が低い暗号資産を選ぶ傾向があります。トークンが最大供給量に達した後、そのコインの供給は停止し、マイナーは新しいコインを得られなくなります。しかし需要は伸び続けることから、結果として通貨の価値が上昇するというわけです。たとえば、DeFi（分散型金融）プロトコルのアーベ（AAVE）は、最大供給量が1億以下の仮想通貨の良例です。

The maximum supply of Bitcoin is 21 million, and according to predictions from 2017, assuming a halving of mining speed every four years, the last coin is expected to be mined around 2140.

There are differences in the supply of virtual currencies. Developers of virtual currencies can decide whether to set a certain limit on the supply of coins based on the blockchain or currency strategy. Ethereum, for example, has no supply limit, allowing miners to mine this virtual currency indefinitely. Such virtual currencies are called 'inflationary virtual currencies' as their supply continues to increase. This is due to the continuous circulation of more tokens than demand, leading to a decrease in overall value. Some virtual currencies may limit supply (indefinitely) or burn (destroy) tokens. A similar phenomenon occurred with the virtual currency 'Terra (LUNA)' in 2022.

The appeal of virtual currencies with limited supply. Investors tend to choose cryptocurrencies with limited or low supply. After the maximum supply of tokens is reached, the supply of the coin stops, and miners cannot obtain new coins. However, due to the continuous growth in demand, the value of the currency tends to increase as a result. For example, AAVE, a DeFi protocol, is an example of a virtual currency with a maximum supply of less than 100 million.
