Genomic insights into nine nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospirales

The order Nitrospirales, which includes both nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria, plays a central role in nitrification. Here, we sequenced the genomes of nine Nitrospirales members, including genomes from previously unsequenced taxonomic Nitrospira lineages. Of these nine Nitrospirales genomes, seven are closed and two are nearly complete (1 and 5 contigs, respectively) and were obtained from following nitrite-oxidizing cultures: Nitrospira sp. Nam80, Nitrospira sp. LUA16, Nitrospira sp. M1, Nitrospira sp. Nam74, Nitrospira sp. Ecomares 2.1, Ca. Nitrospira bockiana 47C, Ca. Nitrospira calida Ns10, Nitrospira sp. Kam-Ns4a, and Ca. Nitrospira salsa AC6. In conclusion, our study highlights the adaptability of the different nitrifying families of the order Nitrospirales to diverse environments and reveals the presence of new taxonomic lineages.
