Social and Psychological Consequences of Office Work, 1983

The purpose of this project is to examine the mental and social strains of office work. To cover as many aspects of this as possible, the project aims at combining 1) an extensive questionnaire survey of office workers with 2) a number of intensive part-studies on well-defined problems concerning the same population. # The purpose of the extensive questionnaire survey, originating in a pilot study which was carried out in 1981-1982, is to examine various kinds of working strains and the reactions they produce. The survey aims at describing representative types of office work, ranging from the performance of complicated procedures demanding very high qualifications to monotonous routine work demanding very few individual skills. In addition to this, the questionnaire survey examines quantitative as well as qualitative work load, contact with clients, and the extent to which new technology has been introduced into office work, e.g. display terminals and word processors
