The Abundance and Variations Within Insects

The abundance of insects was examined in two different environments at York University’s Keele Campus. This was observed by a total of twenty different quadrat samplings in both a grassland and woodlot. Ten quadrats were randomly placed in grassland, each observed for thirty seconds. The number and specie of insects present in each individual quadrat within thirty seconds were observed and identified. Insects were solely based on the presence of wings, and their common name was noted. The number of different species identified in each quadrat was noted as the different recognizable taxonomic unit (rtus). The total number of insects of all the species combined in each quadrat were counted and noted by the researcher. This process was then repeated another ten times in the woodlot. Once again, the researcher placed ten quadrats randomly in the woodlot and observed the different species and number of insects present in the quadrat within thirty seconds. The criterion for identifying insects remained the same as used in the grassland, and the specie, different recognizable taxonomic units, and total number of insects was noted following the same procedures and criteria used in the grassland. Overall, twenty different quadrats were examined, and the abundance of insects were noted; ten in the grassland and ten in the woodlot.
