Tetraploid blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) are known to be self-incompatible, and self-pollination reduces the number of mature seeds in the fruit. The number of mature seeds in the fruit has been reported to correlate with fruit size and ripening time, and thus, seed number is an important factor in blueberry cultivation; however, the mechanism by which seed stunting occurs is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study is to elucidate the mechanisms that control seed development using the tetraploid blueberry cultivar 'Hortblue Petite' (Blue Muffin) as an example, and to investigate the effects of seed development on fruit growth and maturation.
