Artifact Catalog, Askew Refuge Reforestation

The procedures employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), St. Louis District, Curation and Archives Analysis Branch, Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections to rehouse the archaeological material from USACE, Vicksburg District are discussed below. In the rehousing process of each investigative effort for the Vicksburg District collection, staff generally followed the same standard procedures. Upon completion of the curation management project, the Vicksburg District collection was sent to the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, Mississippi State University for permanent curation.

Usually, the first step in the rehousing process is to obtain copies of cultural resource reports, artifact catalog sheets, and field notes pertaining to the collections from the St. Louis District archivist processing the archival collection; however, this collection was found in a container housing Demonstration Erosion Control phases I and II (DEC I and II), and there was no associated documentation for the Askew Refuge Reforestation investigation other than a photocopy of the title page of the final report that was included in the bag containing the artifacts. Because of the lack of documentation for this investigation little information on the analytical techniques employed by the investigating organization to recover and process the collection is known.

The Askew Refuge Reforestation investigation was conducted by Historic Preservation Associates in 1995, probably to locate any cultural resources in Panola, Tate, and Tunica counties that would be affected by Yalobusha and Tallahatchie River Channel Maintenance Projects. The sites represented by artifacts for this collection are 22TU602, 22TU604 22TU609, 22TU611, 22TU6013-22TU615, 22TU619, and 22TU626. The report authors were Timothy C. Klinger, John L.
