Genome sequencing to understand how microbes interact to allow growth and community success under extreme conditions, focusing on a region of peridotite rock at The Cedars, a serpentinization environment in northern California, along the Russian River. Having draft genomes of the major community members in this region of very high pH (≥ 11.5) and nearly total absence of organic carbon will be key to understanding: 1) how the individual microbes make a living; 2) how the community members cooperate to achieve success in this hostile place; and 3) how to bring these microbes into cultivation.
