Nighttime light remote sensing (hereinafter referred to as night light, NL) has become an increasingly important indicator reflecting human activities including socioeconomics and energy consumption. Existing nighttime light datasets, such as the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard the National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP), have limitations in both temporal coverage and data quality. Therefore, we propose a nighttime light convolutional long short-term memory (NTLSTM) network, and apply it to generate the world's first artificial nighttime light dataset (PANDA) for China covering the period from 1984 to 2020. Model evaluation against original imagery reveals that the average root mean square error (RMSE) reaches 0.73, the coefficient of determination (R²) reaches 0.95, and the pixel-level linear slope is 0.99, indicating that the generated dataset has high data quality. The model outputs can well capture the temporal trends of newly built-up areas. The correlations between socio-economic indicators (built-up area, gross domestic product, and population) and PANDA are better than all existing datasets, demonstrating its greater potential in identifying distinct controls of nighttime light changes across different stages. In addition, PANDA depicts different types of urban expansion, outperforms other products in representing road networks, and provides potential nighttime light landscapes for early periods.
