This essay retraces the story of a widespread misinterpretation. In the first half of the 19th century, during the feverish years of Risorgimento, many Italian writers rediscovered Dante as prophet of the unification of Italy, but also as exile for political reasons. Mazzini and Lord Byron identified with him. Dante's theoretical support to universal Empire created the myth of "the Ghibelline poet". The young poet Vincenzo Ampolo confronted himself with this conception, but despite Dante's thought was different, he continued to depict the Florentine as enemy of the clergy.
