Synechococcus is an important contributor to primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems. Little is known about Synechococcus in estuarine environments. The Yangtze River estuary is the largest estuary in China with obvious seasonal changes, and there is a large spatial heterogeneity along the gradient from the freshwater inlet of the Yangtze River to the East China Sea. It is very important to study the distribution and genetic diversity of Synechococcus in the Yangtze River estuary.
