The Deep Mine Microbial Observatory is a series of boreholes draining fracture fluids that span depths from 800-4,850 ft. DeMMO is located in the former Homestake Gold Mine, now the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, SD. We collected fluid samples from each borehole (DeMMO1-6) between December 2015 and December 2019 for 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The purpose of this study is to compare microbial communities across a range of depths and geochemical conditions over time.
