Group 3: Dataset 2 - Observation of the Plant Specie Late Purple Aster in Grassland

The data for this lab was collected on September 23, 2015 in York University Keele Campus. Five students from 14:30 to 17:30 used the grassland by the Danby Woodlot to collect twenty samples of data for the Late Purple Aster (Symphyotrichum Prenanthoides) plant species. The objects used in this experiment were two transects. First, the students chose an area where a large amount of Late Purple Aster inhabited. One of the transect measuring tape was placed in a vertical line in the middle of the inhabited area. Then, when the Aster plant was present along the transect, the distance on the transect was recorded. Also, the plant’s height was measured by the student using a second transect measuring tape. The measurements of the distance and height were noted in feet but later converted to meters. Second, the number of leaves and the number of flowers on the plant were estimated using nothing by the naked eye. Finally, the crowding level, as in the level at which the plant was surrounded by other plant species (0=open, 1=some plants nearby, 2=quite a few plants nearby, 3=very crowded patch of plants within 50cm) was estimated by the students.
