KM3NeT Seismic Network (K3SN)

The KM3NeT Seismic Network (K3SN) is operated by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN-LNS) and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia – Sezione di Palermo (INGV-PA). It leverages the submarine km3-scale Neutrino Telescope (KM3NeT), which has been enhanced within the scope of the “Distributed Laboratory on the SEA” (IDMAR), a project for the construction of the largest multidisciplinary laboratory for scientific and technological marine research in Europe. The infrastructure links an onshore laboratory in Portopalo di Capo Passero (Sicily, Italy) to a submarine network of Junction Boxes and interlink cables, located 3500 meters below the surface, 80 km offshore. This framework ensures reliable connectivity for power supply, supervision, and real-time data transfer.
