The Early Medieval Monastic Cemetery at Llandough, Glamorgan

In 1994 an archaeological excavation adjacent to the church of St. Dochdwy at Llandough near Cardiff revealed a major cemetery of 1026 burials. Radiocarbon dating showed the burials to date from the 5th or 6th centuries AD to the 10th or early 11th century. It was considered important that a detailed catalogue of all burials should be made widely available to facilitate future analysis. This has been achieved by means of an on-line database of over 800 burials. The database is also linked to an interactive site plan or GIS interface and the results of searches can be plotted from query results to see different distributions of grave types. Alternatively, the on-line GIS can itself be used to query, view and explore the burials data directly. The GIS files (in ESRI shapefile format) may be downloaded and used in an independent GIS package.
