The overall goal of this project is to identify which factors contribute the most to the antagonistic activity of yeasts against soilborne pathogens and to understand their regulation. The molecular mechanisms identified in laboratory experiments will be the basis for understanding the outcome of antagonistic and competitive interactions in soil, successfully employing antagonistic yeasts as plant protection agents against soilborne pathogens, evaluating the biosafety of potential biocontrol yeasts, and eventually developing and registering antagonistic yeasts as plant protection agents.
