This series of Rate Notice and Rate Books from the Narrandera Municipal Council records the payment of rates by property owners. Each year, local councils were required to set the level of, and collect rates in respect of all rateable properties within the municipal or shire district. Each page in these volumes is divided into two sections. On the left hand side is the 'Rate Notice for the year ...', which records what the rates have been valued at by the Council and for the section of land. Details recorded include the name, address and occupation of the owner and the occupier; and the description, situation, areas or dimensions of land. On the right hand side, the page is divided into columns beneath the heading 'Rate Book for the year ...', and the payments made are recorded in the columns beneath the relevant heading - general, water, sewerage, street lighting, library special, garbage, sanitary etc. This side also records any rates or charges written off and arrears carried forward.
