Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), NHERI 2023: Using Laser-Lines and Cameras to Measure Vertical Displacement

This research describes the development of a new method of measurement used to solve geotechnical problems using image analysis through non-contact mechanisms in a simplified way. The approach developed and the research presented have demonstrated the flexibility and versatility of the developed method. Through reliable monitoring of structure and settlement behavior, researchers can adapt the program to track settlement areas around structures. This project is unique due to its use of non-contact methods and image-processing procedures to identify changes in settlement. Its uniqueness arises from its deviation from traditional measurement techniques and the development of an innovative, adaptable approach for data collection. The intended audience includes those conducting geotechnical and earthquake engineering research interested in discovering new methods to enhance measurement techniques by adapting alternative approaches.
