RNA sequencing of Streptococcus pneumoniae from a pediatric case of severe pneumonia with plastic bronchitis

This study presents metagenomic DNA sequencing data from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of a pediatric patient with severe pneumonia complicated by rare plastic bronchitis. The goal of this targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) analysis was to unbiasedly identify and characterize the causative microbial pathogen(s) directly from clinical samples, bypassing the limitations of traditional culture methods. The data revealed the presence and abundance of Streptococcus pneumoniae, confirming its etiological role in this severe case. This dataset provides a valuable genomic resource for understanding the microbial etiology of severe pulmonary infections and their complications, and will aid in the diagnosis and study of similar critical cases in the future.
