KHAYRINISO MAJIDKHONOVA AND THE JADID STRATEGY FOR THE MODERNIZATION OF NATIONAL MEDICINE: FOREIGN EDUCATION AND THE PROCESSES OF INTELLECTUAL TRANSFER

This article provides a comprehensive historical analysis of the life and professional legacy of Khayriniso Majidkhonova within the broader context of the Jadid movement’s strategy for the modernization of national medicine and its policy of overseas education. The primary objective of the study is to examine the historical influence of medical knowledge, academic culture, and professional values acquired at German universities on the development of modern healthcare in Uzbekistan. The article argues that the Jadid policy of sending talented young people to European universities constituted a deliberate strategy for the formation of national intellectual capital. In this context, Khayriniso Majidkhonova’s medical education in Germany is interpreted not merely as an individual academic achievement but as a historical process of intellectual transfer through which the traditions of European university medicine were introduced into Central Asia. Drawing upon contemporary historiographical approaches, including the history of knowledge, transnational history, and gender history, the study offers a new interpretation of Majidkhonova’s historical legacy. It demonstrates the significant role played by nationally trained specialists educated abroad in introducing modern medical thinking, clinical culture, and academic standards into the healthcare system of Uzbekistan. Furthermore, through an examination of Khayriniso Majidkhonova’s professional activities, the article analyzes the practical implementation of Jadid ideas concerning women’s education, the development of national professional cadres, and medical reform. The findings reveal the importance of German university medicine in the modernization of healthcare in Uzbekistan while simultaneously contributing to new scholarly perspectives on the intellectual history of Central Asia. Ultimately, the article moves beyond a conventional biographical narrative and reinterprets Khayriniso Majidkhonova’s legacy as a significant historical example of transnational knowledge exchange and intellectual modernization, thereby situating her contribution within broader international processes of academic mobility and knowledge circulation.
