Ecological communities are stressed by anthropogenic changes, threatening biotic interactions and ecosystem functioning. By experimentally investigating changes of interaction networks over time caused by anthropogenic disturbances, we can better understand the underlying ecology and predict our impacts on communities. Here, we used a long-term nitrogen (N) addition experiment to investigate the impacts of N enrichment on seasonal dynamics and structures of plant-pollinator communities in a N-limited, fast-changing alpine meadow. We found that N-induced decline in floral resources increased pollinator turnover over the season, which in turn affected natural interaction rewiring processes among persistent species. Importantly, the effects of N on interaction dynamics were particularly strong late in the season. N-induced disruptions in interaction dynamics further decreased specialization and modularity of pollination networks. Our study highlights that N enrichment can interrupt seasonal connectivity and stability of plant-pollinator networks, providing novel insights on how and why anthropogenic disturbance influences multi-trophic communities.
