'Candidatus Methanoperedens nitroreducens' is an archaeon that couples the anaerobic oxidation of methane to nitrate reduction. In this study we investigated the effect of oxygen exposure on an enrichment culture dominated by 'Ca. M. nitroreducens' (83% enrichment). In batch activity assays supplemented with 5% oxygen in headspace we monitored the methanotrophic activity of both anaerobic and aerobic methanotrophs and investigated the gene expression of 'Ca. M. nitroreducens'.
