Ottoman Nufus Defter for Varbitsa, Shumen, Bulgaria 1256/1840

This dataset contains original scans and full transcriptions with Bulgarian translations of an Ottoman population register (nufus defter) relating to the village (now town) of Varbitsa (Bulgarian: гр. Върбица), Shumen region, northeastern Bulgaria. The register is for the year hijra 1256 (1840) from the Ottoman State Archives (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi, Istanbul). The nüfus defter records all male inhabitants by household, with physical descriptions and approximate ages. The transcription and translation were commissioned by Boris Stefanov and carried out by Dr. Alcan Cafer Mustafa (Director, Regional Historical Museum, Targovishte, Bulgaria), specialist in Ottoman Turkish paleography.
