Als 1960 im Berliner Zoo ein Elefant starb, lautete die Diagnose: Überfütterung durch Zoobesucher:innen. Das löste eine kontroverse Debatte um die richtige Ernährung von Zootieren aus – eine Frage, die bis zu den Anfängen zoologischer Gärten im 19. Jahrhundert zurückreicht. Tiere als Objekte? ist eine Online-Publikation von Wissenschaftler:innen des Museums für Naturkunde Berlin, des Berliner Zoos und der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, herausgegeben von Ina Heumann und Tahani Nadim. Die Publikation ist Teil des vom BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekts "Tiere als Objekte. Zoologische Gärten und Naturkundemuseum in Berlin, 1810 bis 2020". When an elephant died at Berlin Zoo in 1960, the cause of death was recorded as “overfeeding by zoo visitors”. This triggered a controversial debate about the proper feeding of zoo animals – a question that goes back to the founding of zoological gardens in the 19th century. Who is allowed to feed the animals, what should they be fed, and how much of it? Animals as Objects? is an online publication by researchers from the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the Zoo Berlin, and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, edited by Ina Heumann and Tahani Nadim. It was funded by the BMBF as part of the research project "Animals as Objects. Zoological Gardens and Natural History Museum in Berlin, 1810 to 2020".
