Association Between Intrinsic Capacity and Gut Microbiota Composition in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

This study aimed to explore the association between intrinsic capacity (IC) and gut microbiota composition in community-dwelling older adults, elucidating microbiota’s role in fostering resilience and healthy aging. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 52 older adults aged 65 and above in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. IC was assessed across five domains—sensory, cognition, locomotion, psychological, and vitality—using standardized tools recommended by WHO. Fecal samples were collected for next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA to evaluate gut microbiota composition. Alpha and beta diversity indices and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidota (F/B) ratio were analyzed to determine microbial diversity and balance. Linear discriminant analysis effect size was applied to identify taxa associated with IC quartiles. Statistical associations between IC domains and microbiota profiles were explored.
