The X-ray spectrum of the broad line radio galaxy 3C 445 is strikingly reminiscent of that of radio-quiet Seyfert 1s (e.g. NGC 5548) when they are obscured by massive fast winds located within the boundary of the broad line region. We propose a joint XMM-Newton (110 ks) and HST program that will determine the physical conditions of all the phases (namely Fe-K and UV/soft X-ray absorption) of the nuclear outflow in this source. This will be the first case ever confirmed of an obscuring wind in a radio-loud object with far reaching consequences for our understanding of the role that obscuration episodes play during the AGN lifetime.
