GSM-R - Base stations on the network

Quarterly evolution of the number of GSM-R antennas in service on the Infrabel network. Like an ordinary mobile phone, GSM-R is a mobile communication tool, but only for rail. The "R" in GSM-R therefore stands for "rail". Via GSM-R signals, a train driver can talk to the signal box from which Infrabel controls train traffic.An antenna provides GSM-R coverage over a distance of several kilometres. These stations are close to the railway tracks. Like ETCS, GSM-R increases safety on the railway network. ETCS stands for European Train Control System. It is an automatic safety system that continuously monitors a train's speed.
