资源简介:
This granite and cast-iron fountain is currently in St Anthony Gardens, where it was taken in 1933. The bowl is one solid piece of granite, 11 foot across and weighs 6 tons. It was probably made in 1851 at Lamorna, for the opening of the West Cornwall Railway or the Great Exhibition – both of which took place in 1851
The massive block seems to have had some difficulty finding a long-term home and purpose. After various uses – including service as an outdoor pulpit – it was moved about 1867 to the front of St John's Hall. But there were problems – water shortages, blowing spray during breezy weather, and by 1933 a pressing need for car parking space.
The solution was to move it to the new St Anthony Gardens,. The gates of St John's Hall had to be removed to get it out, even this giving only two inches of clearance.
There are now hopes that it can be refurbished with its water supply restored, and thus returned to full working and decorative order.
