Studies in the Ecology of Mason Bog, Sagehen Creek, California

MASTERS THESIS: Research was conducted in Mason Bog, which consists of a non-Sphanum substrate and supports a population of perennials including both species of California sundew. Species distribution and associations were examined and compared with distributions of various site parameters: pH, water table, temperature, and surface slope. The application of available evapotranspiration and weather data to the bog is discussed. The two Droseras are further examined due to their sympatry in Mason Bog. Germination trials to determine Drosera temperature requirements were conducted in an effort to clarify the temperature regime of Mason Bog. Comparisons between seed sites within California, both for seed germination and plant morphology, were used to place Mason Bog Drosera populations within the range of California variability.
