2023年時点では、世界の英語話者数は約15億人に達し、北京語話者数の約11億人を上回りました。話者数世界第3位はヒンディー語で、第4位はスペイン語です。
米国における言語事情 
米国では公用語が定められていませんが、法律や規則、その他の公式発表には英語（具体的にはアメリカ英語）が用いられます。米国は移民の国であり、多文化が混在しているため、話されている言語も様々です。米国で2番目に多く話されている言語はスペイン語またはスペイン系クレオール語で、2022年時点では約4,203万人以上が家庭で使用していました。また、中国語（普通話と広東語を含む）話者は約350万人、タガログ語は約176万人、ベトナム語は約154万人でした。
家庭内での異言語の使用 
米国では、家庭で英語以外の言語を話す人の割合が州によって異なります。英語以外の言語を話す人の割合が最も高いカリフォルニア州では、2021年時点で人口の約44パーセントが家庭で英語以外の言語を話していました。

Spanish or Spanish Creole is the second most spoken language in the U.S., with over 42.3 million people using it at home in 2022. Additionally, there were approximately 3.5 million Mandarin speakers (including Putonghua and Cantonese), 1.76 million Tagalog speakers, and 1.54 million Vietnamese speakers. The proportion of people speaking languages other than English at home varies by state in the U.S. In California, where the proportion of people speaking languages other than English at home is the highest, as of 2021, about 44 percent of the population spoke a language other than English at home.
