Castor (Ricinus communis) is a high-value crop that produces ricinoleic acid, a raw material for lubricant and other high-end application. Globally ricinoleic acid has a market value of $1.3 billion in 2018, and the market is predicted to increase at 4.6% per year. Despite its importance, breeding of castor is hindered by the lack of a high-quality reference genome and the lack of modern breeding techniques. Here, we constructed an improved, high-quality chromosome-scale genome assembly of the Hale cultivar from sequence data generated using the PacBio platform.
