In 2023, Italy was the third largest European market for Ferrari, after the United Kingdom and Germany. The domestic sales volume of Ferrari luxury cars amounted to 740 units, just over half as many as the amount shipped to Germany. Despite its lower sales volume, the brand is a national icon and keeps on generating considerable social media buzz in Italy, especially on Facebook. A global status symbolIt was in Asia, however, that Ferrari had the highest market share. Here, the Italian manufacturer accounted for over a quarter of the luxury car market. New affluent customers in Asia were particularly attracted by Ferrari’s reputation for exclusivity. The sales volume in Asian countries accounted for about one quarter of the total number of car shipments made in 2021. Ferrari’s low production strategyTo keep this reputation among its customers, Ferrari deliberately pursued a low production strategy. In 2021, only about 11,100 road cars were shipped worldwide, with sports cars making up two-thirds of the total. By comparison, the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz delivered about two million cars a year earlier.
