Natural populations of fungi have been largely neglected from ecological and evolutionary studies, leaving a gap in knowledge on how fungi respond to evolutionary and ecological pressures, such as competition, adaptation, and diversification processes. In recent days, the pace and breadth of fungal genome sequencing efforts and initiatives, and the accessibility of genomic resources, make comparative genomic analyses feasible. Here we sequenced the whole genome of a wild strain of the edible ectomycorrhizal basidiomycete mushroom Amanita jacksonii with the aim to generate and develop markers for population and species level evolutionary studies, as well as to contribute to the ongoing initiatives related to comparative genomics in ectomycorrhizal fungi.
