Volumes of metagenomic nucleic acids have been sequenced and assembled. Several efforts have documented complete and draft bacterial genomes from this data. However, the genomes of viruses that are constituents of the human microbiome are not systematically documented. Rationale: Using data from whole genome shotgun sequencing experiments, viral genomes, their distribution and abundance, and their cellular hosts can be recovered.
