Impatiens capensis Genome sequencing and assembly. Impatiens capensis

The contrasting nature of the only two genera (Impatiens and Hydrocera) of the plant family, Balsaminaceae, has been recognized and speculated about for decades. Furthermore, species of Impatiens are of great commercial importance that have unfortunately been decimated in recent years due to fungal and viral pathogens, resulting in immense losses. A genomic approach toward studying these genera is lacking. As a first step to rectifying this, we present a draft assembly from a de novo sequencing project of an iconic N. American species, Impatiens capensis. This should serve as a reference sequence and assembly for H. triflora and other Impatiens species.
