Limited understanding of fossilization processes introduces uncertainties in interpreting morphological biosignatures. To address this, we examined the preservation of microbial mats dominated by twisted stalks from iron-oxidizing bacteria following exposure to sulfur- and silica-rich conditions and elevated temperatures, simulating environments associated with burial and hydrothermal alteration.
