Bacterioplankton response to phytoplankton lysate across mesoscale eddy dipole in the Pacific Ocean

We hypothesized that mesoscale eddy type (cyclonic vs. anticyclonic) might be a driver of variability in bacterioplankton community composition and metabolic potential. Further, we expected that this in situ variability would translate to differential responses to different dissolved organic matter. We tested this by establishing experiments with bacterioplankton communities sampled on a spatial transect across an eddy dipole and added lysates from Prochlorococcus and Emiliania huxleyi cultures. These samples represent both in situ (starting) communities and those present in the experiments after three days.
