This series contains the indexes to General Ledgers of the Municipality of Balmain. These indexes are arranged alphabetically by first letter of given subject. The following information is recorded in the index: subject, street name, or surname, and the corresponding page in the Ledgers. The page numbers are recorded chronologically. The indexes are in the form of hand written booklets.The range of accounts maintained in the General Ledgers determines the subjects covered by the indexes. The types of accounts include: rates, street accounts, maintenance and repairs, cash, bank charges, salaries of Council staff, depreciation of stock, legal expenses, assets and liabilities, collection of licence fees, purchase and sale of assets, collection of rent from individuals and organisations.The indexes in this series cover the Ledgers for the following period 1867 – 1872, and 1909 – 1921. A majority of the ledgers in NRS 15816 contain an index excepting NRS 15816/1/10 (1893-1894). The location and status of this index is unknown. Indexes may have been maintained in Ledgers from 1942 onwards.Custody History This series was in the custody of Mitchell library until December 2001 when it was transferred to State Records NSW under section 29 of the State Records Act, 1998.
