The 2015 China Mangrove Spatial Distribution Dataset reflects the specific area and spatial distribution of mangroves in various regions of China in 2015.

b. Construction purpose

Mangrove forests are woody plant communities that grow in intertidal zones or river estuaries along tropical and subtropical coasts. Mangroves are a typical type of coastal swamp wetland, and due to their unique characteristics of land sea transition, they have a special response and feedback on the dual impacts of climate change and human activities. Mangroves are an important target for international biodiversity conservation. In recent years, China has continuously increased its efforts in mangrove protection and restoration, becoming one of the few countries in the world with a net increase in mangrove area.

Monitoring the spatial distribution of mangroves in China can provide scientific basis for the protection and management of mangrove ecosystems in China, provide baseline year (2015) data for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), track the implementation progress of SDGs, especially SDG 6.6, SDG 14.2, and SDG 15.1, and provide key data support for specific implementation actions of the International Convention on Wetlands.
