This article analyzes Oscar Wilde’s short story “The Selfish Giant” as a moral and symbolic narrative that explores themes of selfishness, redemption, innocence, and divine justice. The study focuses on the transformation of the Giant’s character and the allegorical representation of seasonal change as a reflection of human morality. At the beginning of the story, the Giant embodies isolation, possessiveness, and emotional coldness, which is symbolically represented through the eternal winter in his garden. The exclusion of children from the garden illustrates the consequences of selfishness and emotional detachment, leading to a barren and lifeless environment. The paper further examines the symbolic role of nature, particularly the seasons, where spring represents joy, renewal, and spiritual awakening, while winter signifies loneliness and moral stagnation. The return of spring following the Giant’s act of kindness towards a small child demonstrates the restoration of moral order and the reward of compassion. This turning point highlights Wilde’s central idea that love and generosity have the power to transform both human character and the surrounding world. In addition, the study explores the Christian allegorical elements in the story, especially in the final scene where the child is revealed as a Christ-like figure. The marks on the child’s hands and feet symbolize sacrifice and divine love, reinforcing the concept of salvation through kindness and humility. The Giant’s ultimate redemption and peaceful death suggest that true happiness and spiritual fulfillment can only be achieved through selflessness and acceptance of others. Overall, “The Selfish Giant” serves as a timeless moral tale that emphasizes ethical responsibility, the transformative power of love, and the universal principle of justice. Wilde uses simple narrative structure combined with deep symbolism to communicate profound philosophical and spiritual messages, making the story relevant for both literary and moral studies.
