VPRS 12648 Toll Collectors' Returns

The Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875) succeeded the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2694) in 1872 when the Secretary of the Department of the Railways also became the Secretary of the Department of Roads and Bridges.One of the means whereby the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges was financed was by the charging of tolls along main roads and for the crossing of rivers. Tolls could be collected directly by the Government departments or toll collection points could be leased to individuals. Toll funds were utilised for the letting of construction and maintenance contracts.This series consists of sets of weekly pro forma returns from the toll collectors at Wannangarra Boat and Brandy Creek near Warragul. Both locations were on the Melbourne to Sale road. Returns were sworn to by the toll collector before a Justice of the Peace and detailed the collections of tolls for each day of the week.VPRS 12648/P1 was formerly registered as Units 5 and 6 of VPRS 1146 Register of Tolls. It was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project.
