A mixed culture of microorganisms composed mainly of the genera Pseudonocardia, Hydrogenophaga, Sphingopyxis, Kaistia and Rhodococcus was successfully employed in the degradation of toluene and ethylbenzene and the synthesis of PHA. Metagenomic analysis revealed synergistic interactions between the culture populations, establishing a syntrophic microbial community.
