The Yap-Palau Trench appears to be the site of an abandoned subduction zone. There are no data to support the presence of either and active Benioff Zone or extensive shallow seismicity beneath the Yap-Palau arc although the geology of the islands and the arc-trench morphology suggest that it was a plate convergence zone in Tertiary time.
