Comments related to “daquan” (“feminist activism” or “punching”) on Chinese social media platform Baidu Tieba

This study aims to analyze the discourse of the manosphere community on Chinese online social media, using Baidu Tieba—a web forum with approximately 70% male users—as the primary data source. The research focuses on the topic of “punching” (“daquan”), a satirical term for feminism, by examining relevant comments posted between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023. This research will shed light on the phenomenon of the manosphere in a non-Anglophone context, addressing the gap in manosphere studies outside the Anglophone world. It will explore the discursive strategies present in relevant comments, as well as the underlying social structures, traditional cultural influences, and ideologies they reflect.
