Monitoring of Osseointegrated Implant Loosening

This research explores a new way to detect early loosening in bone-anchored prosthetic limbs. These implants improve comfort and mobility for amputees but can fail if the surrounding bone weakens. The study uses vibration analysis to spot loosening by measuring changes in how the implant vibrates—specifically, the appearance of extra harmonics caused by instability at the bone-implant interface. Experiments and simulations showed that bone thinning reduces implant stability, leading to slippage and harmonic distortion. A four-stage vibration framework was developed to track loosening progression, offering a non-invasive method to monitor implant health and guide rehabilitation.
