Various groups have been involved in generating EST data from different tissues in maize and different environment conditions. NSF has funded the effort to generate full-length cDNA sequences from the inbred line B73. This endeavor will initially generate EST sequences from the cDNAs and then sequence the entire cDNA for approximately 30,000 gene candidates. These full-length sequences will be important for the annotation process of the genome sequence.
