This series comprises both general correspondence and policy files. Specific subjects include construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, experimentation with different road surfaces, unemployment relief works, co-operation with Defence Department before and during World War II, and construction of road systems and aerodromes in the Northern Territory and country areas of New South Wales for defence mobilization. From 1948 onwards the majority of files concern the establishment of a national highway network, and maintenance and improvement programmes.
